Zoë Mowat Design is a furniture design studio based in Montreal, Quebec. Originally from Edmonton, Alberta, Zoë graduated with a degree in Industrial Design and Graphic Design from the University of Alberta in 2007. Currently she takes on new creative collaborations, custom commissions and works on new prototypes and small production runs in her design studio in the vibrant mile end community of Montreal.
Zoë’s work has a strong sculptural component with emphasis on simple forms, bold colors and unusual material combinations. Her elegant designs often reference the past, particularly the nostalgia of childhood, yet they remain entirely fresh and modern. Zoë’s work celebrates the natural and raw qualities of the material, and most often incorporates solid wood, steel, blown glass and industrial felt. She seeks out recycled wood off-cuts and uses water-based finishes wherever possible, in order to reduce the piece’s overall ecological footprint.
Zoë appreciates objects that have a connection to the maker’s hand. Her unique prototypes and designs embrace this connection and are largely produced by hand in her Montreal based studio. Zoë aims to create objects that are not only functional and aesthetically pleasing, but that can connect with their users in more significant and often personal ways. It is her aim to inspire the user with a lasting object that won’t need replacing.
