Étienne Hotte was born in Buckingham in 1972 and currently resides in Montréal.
In 2001, he graduated from the School of Design of the University of Quebec in Montreal (UQAM). Then and now, chairs became his main area of research.
A versatile artist, he is passionate about both contemporary architecture and rural architectural heritage and developed an interest for costumes, hats, jewelry, geometric frameworks and furniture. He works as a freelancer for the architectural firm of Saucier+Perrotte; Sid Lee, a marketing, design and communication agency; and Moderno, a furniture editor.
His creations have been featured in several international exhibitions, namely at the Saint Étienne International Design biennial in 2004 in Lille, European Capital of Culture, and localy at The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Gallery Commissaire, Atelier Punkt and soon at Studio S+P. The performance he gave at the Pecha kucha event held during the design open house in Montréal in 2008 did not go unnoticed.
Designer Philippe Dubuc has acquired two of his facetted black stools for his new Quebec City boutique. Étienne Hotte’s work was also featured in a book entitled Je lis des romans Harlequin aux oiseaux [I read Harlequin books to birds] designed by graphic design studio Feed. The book was awarded a Graphex.
Étienne Hotte shapes objects that contribute to the semiotics of our time and our aspirations. He sets a sculptural look on things that is intrinsically linked to materials and driven by desire. His aspiration—to find poetry through his work.
