Complexgeometries

With the pomp and mystery of a shamanistic ritual, complexgeometries has unveiled their long awaited fall/winter 2010 collection, “in search of truth.” While remaining true to the spirit and form that has established the label’s cult following, the new collection provides a fresh take on complexgeometries’s signature look. Drawing inspiration from the archetypes of mythology and the shrouded garb of religious ceremony, the pieces each look as though they would be equally at home amid a chic cocktail party or a cabbalistic rite in a foggy forest clearing. In keeping with complexgeometries’s continued fascination with the dissembling that is intrinsic to fashion, “in search of truth” features looks that both conceal and reveal. Hooded robes and billowy shawls are paired with ultratight leggings and skin-baring unitards. The fabrics are by turns delicate and robust: heavy wools and cottons mingle with ethereal silks and vinyls. The color palate is also in keeping with complexgeometries’s established look, as well as the mystical bent of the collection: stark and basic blacks, greys, navies, and creams. True to its name, the collection invites one on a pilgrimage to the realm of purity, achieving a perfectly balanced holy trinity of shape, form, and material.

Created in 2006 by designer Clayton Evans, complexgeometries began as a small label striving to unite form and function in fashion. Frequently using contemporary streetwear such as hooded sweatshirts and basic cotton Ts as a starting point, the designs explore consumer relationships with clothing. This reimagining of the comfortable, along with Evans’s purity of vision and uniquely striking aesthetic, has enabled the label to grow and develop a rabid following around the globe.

Evans was born and raised in a small town in northern Canada. He developed a passion for design at an early age, transfixed by the works of visionaries such as Buckminster Fuller (who was the inspiration for the name “complexgeometries”). While studying fine arts at the Alberta College of Art and Design, Evans realized that his true passion lay in clothing. Completely self-taught as a fashion designer, Evans has been able to bring his artist’s eye and purity of vision to his line in a way that is truly extraordinary among contemporary designers.

As in their previous collection, complexgeometries has also had the honor of collaborating with two other incredibly talented design houses: the artisan jewelry line Harakiri and the design duo Osei-Duro. In addition, complexgeometries has been working with video artist Jason Last, whose forthcoming video of the collection promises to be a stunning visual display.

complexgeometries is sold in select stores around the globe such as Barneys New York, Brown’s London, and Reborn Montreal.
